Transformer Technology state of art and trends of future development

Oil Type Transformer is a mature and technical product and its life story is closely linked to the history of the application of electrical energy starting in the last decades. Based on just one fundamental physical principle, the induction and the basic design features never changed since then. Transformer are needed to feed most of the equipment and apparatus of our daily use which from our personal and public technical environment as well as high power industrial equipment for diverse applications power to voltage range from VA to GVA and mv to MV. Owed to such flexibility the transformer is the most imp link for transmission and distribution of electrical energy from the producer to customer.

Whereas the basic design and principle of transformer – core windings, insulation system remain more or less unchanged there was a tremendous improvement of the specify design and properties in the past.

Transformers and oil have always been synonymous with electric power. Conventional Oil Type Transformers use mineral base insulating oil as the medium for cooling and insulation.

Optimum Design & Features

By using CRGO silicon steel mitred cores and paper enamel covered conductors, the units are made compact, resulting in lower losses, better regulation and longer life. Windings are designed to withstand sufficient thermal, dynamic and electrical strength induced during operation as well as under short circuit conditions. Winding on HT side is provided with sufficient end-turn reinforcement for extra  strength. Radial as well as axial clearances and cooling ducts provided for the coils add to the safety and uniform cooling of the windings and limbs. Each tank is pressure tested and the exterior surface is coated with primer and 2 coats of weather-proof paint. The interior is given anti corrosive protection with oil resistant varnish. Why Go For Diesel Generators?

Gensets are a great way of meeting power requirements during blackout and disaster. These machines have proved a boon to the industries and modern world in supplying high requirement of power. Besides this, generators are heavily used in household for carrying out day to day activities when there is a major black out.

Apart from commercial use Diesel generators are also used for recreational facilities such as in stadium, college, schools, Hospitals, malls, superstores and etc. The best thing about these is that virtually genset can be used anywhere for power requirement.  That’s why one can find these generator heavily used in mining sites, construction sites, military camps and disaster hit areas for providing quick relief. So these machines are a reliable source of power requirements. Generator purchase is a one-time investment; that can save you thousands of bucks because of the hindrance in your work due to long power cuts.

Earlier there were generators that used to make irritating noise and working with them was frustrating. Due to their high noise concentration on work was impossible. To solve this problem advanced and superior technological feature silent generators have come up in the market. These silent gensets are placed outside the buildings, industries and offices supplying power requirements without any noise. These silent machines have flourished in the market making them popular for industrial and household use. Sudhir has the distinction of being the first diesel generator company in the country to comply with the latest CPCB II norms for air and noise pollution.

Switching on these gensets for power requirements saves precious time as one does not have to sit ideal and stop their production. Generator can supply uninterrupted power supply making sure that production do not get halt, which saves a huge amount of money. In current scenario people can find use of these machines heavily in industries and household. As we have discussed earlier that generator supply interrupted power, this is the main factor that silent generators are used in industries when dealing with power requirements.  In the last one decade their demand has increased manifold. Many DG set industries have come up in India in the last one decade. Foreign industry has opened up there branches in, launching new and highly advanced diesel generators.  But not far behind Indian industries are also giving them tough competition in the market. So for market and customer it is a good thing as they would have more option. The fierce competition in market would also lower the prices of the products.

Proper maintenance

Generators can last for long period if proper maintenance is done. It is not that complicated to keep a generator maintained for long period. Most of its parts require lubrication and oiling and it can last for longer period of time. One can go for proper check of the machine if required. But normally these do not need that much of attention and normally last for longer period of time.

A quick snapshot of the interview is given below:

Interview with Sr. Director Marketing, Sudhir Power Limited

With Make in India campaign, many overseas companies are now planning to strengthen their operations in India. Being an OEM of Cummins – USA, what are your plans to maintain your leadership position in power segment?

It is definitely a great step taken by Govt, of India to strengthen the Indian economy by providing space to all investors. With this campaign, all sectors such as real estate, telecom, FMCG, etc. have received a major boost, which has ultimately resulted in the increased demand of power equipment’s too. In the genset segment, I wouldn’t consider our partner – Cummins as a foreign company since they have been in India for over 50 years now. In this dynamic scenario, we are fully prepared to keep fulfilling the increased power demand. The preparedness is also being demonstrated by Cummins by setting up 4 mega plants in Phaltan, Maharashtra with an investment of around Rs. 500 Cr.

How do you see the power generation industry in India especially DG segment ?

Power generation growth is the yard stick determining the growth of any country. The Govt, of India’s focus to attain “Power for All” and the Planning Commission’s 12th Plan to invest 41 trillion in infrastructure will demand an accelerated power backup solutions. We have seen increased demand from all sectors and it’s likely to increase with the expected economic thrust on “Make in India”. I believe, these changes will boost the demand of DG sets and it’s to be an important source of power for the industry.

What is your current capacity (in terms of power generation) and where do you see yourself in next 3-5 years ?

Currently, We are making 7.5 – 3750 kVA silent Gensets with the fuel option of Diesel and Gas. We have a high growth plan for the future which would encompass core as well as non-core sectors. Today, with turnover of around Rs. 2000 Crs, we are growing consistently at a steady pace of 20% year after year Going forward, we would like to multiply our top line & bottom line many fold by adding more products & services to our manufacturing portfolio. We are looking to grow our core business with our existing partners & are also likely to forge a new partnerships in the near future.

Has de-regulation of diesel price impacted your business in some sense ?

Since the past few years, the application of Generators has witnessed a sea change – earlier it used to be base load where Gensets were the only source of power, today the application is more towards the stand by. Earlier the main market was Industry, today it is more wider with more segments such as Retail, telecom, infrastructure etc. thus, increasing the DG demand. Today, power is more of a necessity then a luxury. Hence, the sale of Gensets is quite independent of Diesel Price.

How do you see government’s agenda of “Power to all”? How are you anticipating the future of Indian power market ?

This is a very good initiative from the Govt, of India where in there will be a huge scope for generation, transmission and distribution equipment companies. Although, demand is rising, but environmental concerns are changing the way energy is generated and distributed. As a result, to better incorporate the intermittent power supply from renewable energy supplies, we are also moving ahead in our product technology and have started manufacturing solar products such as solar transformers etc. Actually, this push from Govt, of India has opened a plethora of opportunities for power companies like us who themselves are working from decades to put a sufficient and reliable power infrastructure in place.

What are the key learning you have had from the Indian solar energy sector so far?

The key learning we have from the solar industry is that it is very fluctuating in nature, be it about the prices or technology. As an experienced player in the electrical industry in India, we have come to conclude that solar power will find its maximum takers from the commercial and industrial segments.

What, according to you, are the key challenges faced by the Indian Solar market?

The biggest challenge we see right now is the price competitiveness in the solar industry. There is no fixed price for most services and products and we hear rates falling within a very wide range. Another challenge in the solar industry is the lack of technical awareness among the solution providers. This, we feel, will inadvertently reflect in the quality of the executed solar projects, sooner or later.
